The experts at this product design services company want to talk about Parafernalia, an Italian brand established in 1968 in Milan. The brand pays tribute to Milan’s pioneering, innovative design scene. Motivated by Milan’s revolutionary design movements that occurred in the 1970s and onwards, the company produced a collection of writing tools and desk accessories that are as avant-garde as they are stylish. From the get-go, product design companies say the brand concentrated on Italian design objects such as home accessories, lighting, and ornamental items.
Also, ingenious gadgets ferried from a London product design and development company made up part of the brand’s collection in the late 1960s. Immediately after that, several collaborations with designers soon followed, resulting in a line of decorative products and lamps under the Parafernalia label. Nevertheless, in the early 1970s, another Italian icon played a role in opening a new door for the brand. At the same time, architecture and design magazine Domus asked the product design services company to come up with a writing tool for a special edition of the publication. Parafernalia went to architect and designer Sergio Carpani, who made the AL 13 pen. After that, everything else is history. Throughout the years, the company teamed up with renowned designers to manufacture innovative pencils, pens, ballpoint pens, and accessories. Amidst them, two-time Compasso d’Oro winner Giulio Iacchetti. The designs integrated creativity and refinement with contemporary aesthetics, functionality, and playfulness. Original and avant-garde, most product design services companies say the products discover new concepts while providing the convenience of use and simplicity of conventional writing tools. Also, the company cherishes the “Made in Italy” label. Each part is designed and assembled in Italy, making the Parafernalia’s line a tribute to the country’s design genius and phenomenal craftsmanship. The Parafernalia Collection The brand’s oldest collection began with the AL 13 pen, which remains part of the permanent collection. Called Al 115, the ballpoint pen has a minimalist but sporty design. It highlights a body created from a single bar of aluminum with an anodized finish. Customers can select between twelve colors that range from bright orange and yellow to navy and gray. The Diamante series highlights a Giulio Iacchetti design. Created from anodized aluminum, these lead pencils have a textured pattern manufactured with a diamond knurling tool. The pencils come in profound hues: Quarzo, Sabbia, Piombo, and Carbone. Who Was Sergio Carpani? Sergio Carpani was born in 1945 and lived as well as worked in Milan. In 1970 he began to practice as a graphic and industrial designer, working side by side with various national and foreign companies, both as a product planner and the company's image coordinator. In 1972, he got the MACEF prize for the timer project. Afterward, in 1973 he received the 3rd prize during the manifest competition of the TRIENNIALof Milan. In 1874, the modern Art Museum of New York gave him the title of LINEA. In 1978, his lamp “ZAGAR” got recognition during the “Compasso d’oro” Art Award. In 1982, he received the 2nd prize for the MILAN NORTHERN RAILWAYS logo. In 1984, he participated in the European Design exhibition. In 1987 he won the competition of the Hospital St.Antoine - Paris for a new pavilion (in association with the Doat-Fabre-Vassord Studio). Sergio Carpani designed many of the brand’s products. They include the Linea pencil, which also debuted in Ridley Scott’s Alien. The pencil features an anodized aluminum body with rubber accents and an innovative drawing lead dispenser specially made for architects and designers. Also, Carpani created the iconic Revolution ballpoint pen in 1978 as a commemorative design to mark the building of the Pompidou Centre in Paris. Made from 31 different parts, the anodized aluminum and ABS pen is put together by hand and is available in twelve colors. Last but not least, the Divina fountain pen dates back to 1978, but the company re-introduced it to the collection in 2017. The fountain pen features an elegant and minimalist design from a single aluminum bar. Innovative Technology Goes Hand In Hand With Playful Design Additionally, the Parafernalia collection includes the button-less Shaker pen. A good example of the brand’s commitment to freshness and playful design, the pen has no classic push release system. Alternatively, the user has to shake the pen to release or retract the refill. Similar to other products, Shaker is created with durability and is equipped with an anodized aluminum body with chrome-plated brass details. Additionally, the Falter 2D pencil is another brilliant design. Invented by designer Albert Ebenbichler and developed in collaboration with ATO design, this pencil gives the nod to the DIY movement. Since it comes with an assembly kit, the product reassures the user to make use of the pencil with the included tool. Also, Faler 2D includes a ruler and a stand, all of them produced from steel. The company provides lead refills, and a range of Schmidt refills that work with every product it sells in the long run. Plus, there are ink bottles to use with the fountain pens, with colors varying from classic blue, black, and red to caramel, magenta, emerald, turquoise, orange, and yellow.
